Pros

Lightweight, compact, and portable, the TRX Suspension Trainer provides a complete workout using bodyweight resistance. Ideal for time-conscious people who need a convenient, easy-to-use exercise system. Excellent for core or balance-focused programs. Can be used in hotel rooms, gyms, or even outside.

Cons

The anchor requires a doorway, branch, or other solid structure that can support 200 pounds for proper safety. You have to learn new exercises. The exercises require the development of balance and a solid core.

Bottom Line

The TRX Suspension Trainer is a comprehensive fitness solution portable enough to take on the road, but versatile enough to use at home or in place of a gym membership.

Fast and Flexible Fitness Solutions

Suspension workouts have become very popular in recent years. In this review, I will tell you all about how the TRX Suspension Trainer is the best solution for the mobile athlete. Their all-in-one solution is lightweight, is easy to use, and takes up almost no space at all. If you have room for an umbrella, you have room for the TRX Suspension Trainer.

When I travel I sometimes run into trouble finding a location to do my regular workout. And travel solutions usually compromise functionality in order to decrease weight and increase portability. This is not the case with the TRX Suspension Trainer. This system helps me stay on my exercise schedule because all I need is 30 minutes and a door to anchor the straps. I can do a full cycle of High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) to boost my energy or fight the side effects of travel. Now I spend more time exercising when traveling than I do at home, but it’s not a chore. Working out relieves my jet lag symptoms and helps me reset to “normal” so I can make the most of every trip.

This suspension trainer is so good I use it at home, too. It is an elegant tool that gives me a complete, full-body workout using bodyweight resistance instead of heavy weights or complicated equipment. The exercises improve my balance and strengthen my core while I add muscle and definition. In addition to the physical benefits, the workouts clear my mind and make me feel happy.

Benefits of Suspension Training

There are lots of good reasons to try suspension training, but my favorite is the convenience. Because of its light weight and minimal space requirements, it can be used  anywhere you can find a few square feet of floor space and a few minutes of time. It has made it possible for me to increase the amount of exercise I get in a week by helping me use my spare time more effectively.

The nature of suspension training requires proper form and a fully activated core. Any effective fitness plan revolves around core exercises, so I use suspension training because every exercise works my core and abs. A strong focus on my core reduces the chances of injury and lets me train harder and longer. As a result, I burn more fat and am better able to keep my muscles in shape.

Physical therapists have incorporated the TRX Suspension Trainer as a rehabilitation tool for chronic lower back pain. Most of the exercises can be modified to use as little or as much bodyweight as desired. The difficulty of each exercise can be adapted to literally any level of ability. This makes it ideal for the elderly and people in rehab.

Because it focuses on core and balance exercises and uses your own bodyweight, suspension training can be beneficial for everyone. If you feel like you need a suspension trainer that uses more than one anchor, the Jungle Gym XT is an option. It has a dual anchor system that will give beginning trainers more confidence and stability. The only downside is that its anchors are not as adaptable. Which system is best for you depends on your individual needs and comfort.

The Best Suspension Training Workout

I like using suspension trainers to do pull-ups. Pull-ups are challenging for most people, and many people can’t even do one. Beginners often use the wrong form and can end up hurting themselves. Fortunately, when you use a suspension system, you can ease your way in. A suspension system lets you use a fraction of your body weight while you perfect your form. As your muscles and confidence grow, you will find yourself doing pull-ups like a pro.

If you’ve never used a suspension training system, this handy guide to pull-up exercises is a great way to get started. It will help protect you from injury while you explore different ways to exercise.

But the possibilities of suspension training go far beyond pull-ups. You can get a holistic workout by trying a variety of moves that work multiple muscle groups. The TRX system comes with videos and an instruction manual to ensure you maximize your results. The system includes the following seven foundational moves that can be used to craft a total-body workout:

  • Push-up
  • Pull-up
  • Plank
  • Squat
  • Lunge
  • Hinge
  • Rotate

Using these seven foundational moves, you can supplement your regular gym training when you have a few minutes, or it can be used as your primary training program.

I am in better shape and spend more time exercising because of my suspension trainer. It’s the perfect solution to sneak in an extra few minutes of exercise, and I’ve found that when I get frustrated or upset, ten minutes on the straps melts my tension away and makes me smile.
